The Whiskey Monologues

PUNCH DRUNK

A poem should pack a punch.
Like whiskey, it is distilled,
Filtered, increased in potency.
Single malt, like a poem,
Is best sampled neat.
It is a pleasure often
Indulged alone.
After all, one should
Always give it
One’s full attention.
Poetry can be dry and peaty,
Light and sweet,
Smoky and intense.
Burn the back of the throat;
Leave you with a sore head.
Whiskey and poetry together:
A somewhat acquired taste.
